Created by British Columbia born artist Julie Oakes, Buddha Composed creates a world based on imagery borrowed from the classical Buddhist iconography.
Drawing upon her continuing study of Buddhism, the artist working from the traditional iconography constrasts her creations against a backdrop of framed images to disturb the concentration of the Buddha.
These conflicting images present a strange yet palpable tension on one hand and on the other, beguile the viewer with their lush decorative qualities which can lull one into a false sense of peace and comfort.
The context in which the new and the classical are juxtaposed addresses various contemporary social, political, gender, environmental, and philosophical ideas.
Also included are selected paper works which serve as a symbolic completion of the second stage of the Gnondro.
Using the henna residue left over from colouring her hair, Julie makes broad gesture drawings of Buddha or Bodhisatvas, superimposing imagery from photographs taken during a return trip to India in 2004.
She then collages pages from her journals, postcards, Tibetan paintings, prints, drawings and writings gathered and created during her first visit to India back in 1970.
These works symbolically bring her full circle and complete a process of study and understanding.
