Fall Art Classes 2010

When you take an art course at the Varley Art Gallery you learn from some of the area's most talented instructors and artists who teach a variety of media & genres. Classes range from photography to drawing for the absolute beginner to hand-built pottery.

How to Register

To register for Fall Art Classes follow any of the 4 ways to register below.

In the fall we will be offering our full range of adult programs including beginner classes in watercolour, acrylic, oil, mixed media and collage, drawing, hand-built pottery and photography. Program and registration information is also available in the Fall Markham Life Guide.  Program registration will start on August 18.

Fall Art Classes for Children

Elements of Art & Design
(ages 7 - 10)

Would you like to challenge your children to explore their creativity in a fun and creative environment?

Our professional artist/instructor will introduce your children to the principles and elements of colour and design, whilst encouraging self-expression and experimentation. Children will build on this knowledge and explore drawing, watercolour and acrylic painting, printmaking, clay & multi-media sculpture. These art fundamentals are essential in developing both observation, spatial skills and co-ordination.

Classes include visits into the Gallery for inspiration from the masters of Canadian art. At the end of the term, kids will be proud to show off their work in their own in-class Art Show! Classes held at the Varley Gallery. No classes on Oct. 9 (Thanksgiving) and Nov. 20 (Homes for the Holidays)

Sculpture & Design Fundamentals
(ages 8 - 12)

For the young artist, who would like to continue to 'brush up and sharpen' their artmaking skills.  For the intermediate student, kids will take their knowledge of colour and design priniciples to the next level.  More challenging and Designed specially for the curious and tactile child, this class will explore the wonderful world of three-dimensional art!  Classes will focus on sculpture creation from a variety of media including clay, recyclable materials, paper and everyday objects.  Projects emphasize creative thinking and exploration of materials while developing additive and subtractive sculpting techniques, building skills and improvement of co-ordination.  All materials provided; additional $10 cost of glazing and kiln-firing payable at time of registration. Young Art Masters

Mixed Media for Mini Artists

If your little one has shown an eye for colour and loves to get his or hands messy, this is the perfect class to start their artistic journey.  Kids will learn about a variety of media;  printimaking, pastels, paint and more!  It is never too early for your child to explore their creative side, and improve their spatial, observation and self-expression. After School Studio
(ages 8 - 12)

Creativity, experimentation, and the development of technical skills are the fundamentals of this year-round art course.  The program outline includes variety of art media and techniques, including drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking.  Students will work on art projects related to various Gallery exhibitions and special art programs and will have an opportunity to study works from the Gallery’s permanent collection and/or temporary exhibitions.  There is a focus on the process of art, and the promotion of self-expression.  All materials provided.  Limited spaces available. This course will provide an opportunity for high school students, seeking to apply for art schools, to develop the necessary skills to produce a complete and winning portfolio! Students will work from their creative imagination, still life or images, meaningful to them, using various media to explore colour, perspective and composition. Individual and group critique will assist with the refinements of their creative process, technical application and visual problem solving. All materials provided. Acrylic Painting - Beginner

This course for the novice acrylic painter will introduce students to the unique, “forgiving” qualities of acrylic paint and allow them to experiment with a variety of techniques.

Start at the very beginning and learn about choosing paints and painting surfaces and how to make the most of your paint and brushes as you work. Basic colour theory and colour mixing will be explored as well as creating glazes and textures.

Drawing for the Absolute Beginner

The perfect class for ones who have always wanted to learn to draw but were afraid to take the plunge! This class could be the springboard to further art studies in painting, design.

Hand-built Pottery 
(adult)

Explore one of the oldest forms of artistic expression in this introductory class in hand-built pottery. Students will be introduced to different materials and equipment involved in sculpting, as well as basic techniques in coil, pinch and modeling.

Learn how to create one-of-a-kind art that is a combination of function and aesthetics. Students will have the opportunity to create two complete sculptural pieces which will be glazed and kiln-fired.

Material fee of $45, payable at time of registration to cover the cost of the supplied materials and kiln-firing for 2 pieces. For additional pieces, a $10 fee per piece applies.

Landscapes for the Avid Painter

Life Drawing - Beginner

Photography for Beginners
(adult)

This introductory course by our professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how you can express yourself through the camera, to share ideas and inner feelings.  Participants will become familiar with composition techniques so your image will get the 'wow' factor and you will investigate how light affects form, colour and composition; how to choose the right shooting angle and create perspective; how to look at light;  and how to best use light and shadow.  Get to know the workings of your camera to best utilize this unique instrument so you can capture that moment in time! Digital or Film cameras are welcome although the course is geared to the digital shooter. However, almost any format is welcome.  Recommended accessories include:  tripod, accessory or pop-up flash, memory cards and batteries. Other supplies will be discussed in the first class.

The Art of the Portrait
(adult)

As an homage to Fred Varley, one of Canada's greatest portraitists, participants will learn the foundations of portraiture and experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials including soft pastels and acrylics (no oil paints). With the emphasis on colour, perspective and design, students will work on different methods from still life and photographs, to mirrors (for self-portraits) and a live model to sharpen their ability to capture likeness.  This class is suitable for absolute beginners, and is open to a limited number of students.  A perfect complement to the portraits of Varley exhibited in the permanent collection of the gallery. A nominal fee of $20 (cash) covering the expense for a live model for selected session(s) must be paid to the instructor on the first day of classes.

The Art of Printmaking(adult)

This is one of a kind class where you will discover the mysterious world of printmaking, an art form that is almost lost and often misunderstood.  You will be exposed to the artist Sarka Buchl-Stephenson's personal international print collection. Participants will learn the history behind printmaking and have hands-on experience in the process of relief and intaglio printing.  Some of the techniques that participants will learn include: drypoint, mono-based printing, lino-cut and Styrofoam printing.  You will have an incredible opportunity to visit the artist' studio and try your hand at printing using a professional printing press. The final project involves creating a series of personalized cards.  A materials fee of $45 will be payable at time of registration.

Watercolour - Progression

Teaching Staff at the Varley

Our qualified and experienced instructors will help you explore your creativity, while teaching you new techniques and art concepts. Andrew Hamilton
Andrew Hamilton is a Scottish-born artist transplanted to Canada and is inspired by the magnificent landscapes, especially the northland. Andrew is a painter of light in all its forms from landscapes to still life. Andrew was educated at OCAD in the interdisciplinary program majoring in drawing and painting. Andrew's work can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States and internationally.  Andrew was recently a Fine Arts Professor & Faculty Advisor at St. Lawrence College, and Curator at the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery in Brockville.

Andy Torani
Andy is a recent graduate from York University. After completing five years at York he received his bachelor of arts in art history and his bachelor of education. Andy has taught art classes to various ages in the primary, junior, intermediate and senior level and has a passion for education. Beyond the class Andy loves to not only learn the history of art but enjoys drawing and painting in both a realistic and cartoonist style.

Beverly Kelly
A Fine Arts graduate from Guelph University who will begin her Masters at OCAD this fall. Beverly has had two solo exhibitions in Toronto, and has shown her work at numerous galleries and art festivals around the city. She divides her time between teaching Visual Arts and Art History at the City Academy in Toronto and painting at her home in Stouffville..

Caroline Doyle Keane
Caroline is a Markham native, who received her degree in Fine Arts at York University, and has continued studies at the Ontario College of Art. As a Registered Art Therapist, Caroline fully appreciates the power of art and the positive impact it has on our lives.

Glenn Bernabe
Glenn Bernabe is a graduate of OCAD, a signature member of The Pastel Artists of Canada, the Portrait Society of Canada as well as a local member of The Markham Group of Artists. He has received Honourable Mention and Best in Show in several regional and nationwide juried competitions. In 2003, he made the top 100 in the Pastel Journal Magazine's "Pastel 100Annual International Juried Competition." Also, he has taught many classes and workshops in drawing and pastel arts in various institutions including the McMichael Art Gallery, Durham College and for the City of Vaughan.

Jamie-Lee Pickrell
A graduate of York University, studying Art History and taking a wide variety of Studio Courses, Jamie-Lee is a veteran of our children's art classes and camps. In her fourth year of teaching, Jamie-Lee's talent, enthusiasm, creativity, warmth, experience and winning smile makes her one of the kids' favourite art instructors. She is attending the Toronto Art Therapy Institute.

Janet Hendershot
Janet graduated from York University in Fine Arts. She has represented Canada abroad and received numerous Canada Council and Ontario Arts Council grants.Janet is also a member of the Ontario College of Teachers and Vice President of the Ontario Society of Artists.

Judith Livingston
Judith Livingston, an exhibiting artist, is a graduate of Ontario Teacher's College, and elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour. She brings her skills, as a teacher and artist, to the workshops providing students with a structured, informative and enjoyable voyage into their next artistic venture.

Lisa Fong
Lisa is a graduate of Ontario College of Art & Design, with a focus on Drawing and Painting.  She has been part of the Varley team for two years and also instructs for our Education/School programs.  Her professionalism, creativity and talent are evident in her artwork and approach to teaching, as is her commitment to quality art education for kids of all ages. 

Marta Kotynia
Born in Poland, Marta has extensive art experience with a background in fashion and pottery.  She  received diplomas in Early Childhood Education and Child and Youth Work, and worked as an educator at the Royal Ontario Museum before joining the Varley team two years ago as both an children’s art class and school program instructor.  She continues her artistic practice in the field of pottery.

Neville Clarke
Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1959, Neville Clarke is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design. Neville’s watercolours are remarkable for their technical achievement and eloquent voice. Neville has had a numerous solo and group exhibitions during his artistic career.

Sarka Buchl-Stephenson
Sarka studied book illustration in the Czech Republic and received her Illustration Diploma from the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto. Currently working from the Art Gallery of Ontario’s studio space and the Open Studio, Sarka is primarily focused on printmaking and watercolours. Her latest works include dry point and monoprint techniques.

Sheila Ghazarian
Born in Pickering, Ontario, Sheila has worked for 20 years in the Graphics/Advertising field and has graduated from Durham College, Seneca College and is completing a diploma at the Toronto School of Art. Her work includes drawing, painting, sculpture and printmaking and she has exhibited in numerous exhibitions. Sheila has conducted a number of workshops and art programs and has instructed both adults and children.

Sue DiGioacchino
Interpretive Illustrator, Sue DiGioacchino grew up in Unionville. She has fond memories of purchasing penny candy along Main Street in the 1960’s! She is a graduate of Sheridan College and spent some time in the Fine Arts Program at Guelph University. Sue has taught art in a Montessori environment and has run her own art program. She enjoys working in all types of media.

Vita Keeling
Vita is a Markham resident, and has over 25 years as a Graphic Artist. Vita has studied Commercial Art, Life Drawing, Air Brushing and Printmaking, and teaches art classes to both children and adults. Vita is a member of the Schoolhouse Group of Artists, Markham Group of Artists, and Visual Arts Ontario among others. She has recently formed a portraiture group entitled Painters 6.

Vivian Ha
Vivian is a member of local pottery guilds and shows her work in a variety of art sales and exhibitions. She has also developed and taught various pottery programs with non-profit organizations, summer schools and studios. For Vivian, the art of pottery is not only a skill or a talent but also a passion that she takes seriously. There is nothing more rewarding for her than to see chunks of clay emerging into beautiful forms and functional pieces.
