Get involved in Markham's growing cultural attraction! The Varley Art Gallery of Markham needs volunteers like you. Volunteers are essential for the programs and operations of the gallery. If you have a passion for art, or a flair for retail, or if you are outgoing and enjoy meeting new people, there is a volunteer position for you at The Varley Art Gallery!

| Gallery Guides/Gallery Docents |
Responsibilities: Gallery guides conduct interactive, discussion-based tours of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, for a variety of age groups. Temporary exhibitions change every 6 to 8 weeks, thus guides will be expected to become familiar with new exhibition information on a regular basis.
Although detailed tour information is provided by the Education Co-ordinator, guides are asked to contribute information at scheduled training sessions and conduct research as needed. Resources are available for guides to consult.

Responsibilities: Greet public at art gallery and provide pasic information on current exhibitions during exhibition openings and special events and festivals.

| Special Events Volunteers |
|
Responsibilities: Volunteers participate and assist with the co-ordination of special annual and one-time events at the gallery, including exhibition openings.
Opportunities to assist with a variety of roles for Special Events, including:
Set up and Clean up Food and Beverage servers Coat check assistants Information Guides Raffle ticket sales Prize Table monitors Art Wrappers (Art Auction) Bid Recorders (Art Auction) Bid Spotters (Art Auction) Art Runners (Art Auction) House Monitors (Homes for the Holidays)
Qualifications: Different skills may be required for different jobs. Generally, these volunteers should enjoy working with other people and have good organizational skills, with the ability to work under pressure and tight time constraints.

| Studio Monitors |
|
Responsibilities: Studio monitors assist with supervising Children’s Art Classes, one-day special events art programs, and Public Holiday complimentary drop-in activities. Depending on the program, these sessions can be formal or informal, but always presented by fully qualified Art Instructors. Activities may focus on a particular media, such as watercolour or pastels, or a technique such as collage or potato printing. Studio monitors informally discuss the technique or media, distribute materials, and offer suggestions and encouragement to participants, as well as offering support to the Art Instructor for classroom set up and clean up.
Qualifications: Studio monitors should have some artistic ability and art-making experience and a strong interest in working in an art-making environment. Monitors should be creative and patient and enjoy working with children of all ages.
Required: York Regional Police Vulnerable Sector Screening Certificate; three full reference checks.
Optional: Standard First Aid + CPR C
Minimum requirement: If assisting for Children’s Art Classes, the minimum requirement is once weekly, for 10 weeks according to the class schedule.
Optional Additional skills: Experience working one-on-one with special needs individuals.

| Behind the Scenes Volunteers |
|
Responsibilities: Volunteers assist with administrative activities such as preparing mass mailings, telephoning, and any other jobs that require extra pairs of hands!
Qualifications: Different skills are required depending upon the task. A specific time commitment is not necessarily required. This is a perfect situation for a person who would like to help out occasionally or someone who is not sure which volunteer area interests him / her most and would like to sample different jobs. Possible option of working from home to make telephone calls for class reminders and registration information.

| Membership Campaign Volunteers |
|
Responsibilities: Membership Campaign Volunteers are needed to assist with membership development in the gallery. They will also assist with updating member records.

| Summer Camp Volunteers |
|
Calling young art lovers! Get some valuable hands-on experience in a dynamic, fun and creative atmosphere. Our summer camp volunteers are outgoing, eager to learn and enjoy working with children.
Volunteers are asked for a time commitment of at least one-week, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., (or a maximum of 8 weeks) in July or August. Half-day options are also available, morning (8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.) or afternoon (12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
Tasks include class preparation, assisting youngsters with art projects, art games and activities with the supervision of an art instructor, and organizing and stocking art supplies.
Complete your volunteer hours while building your communication and interpersonal skills, and learning how an art gallery operates.
Required: York Regional Police Vulnerable Sector Screening Certificate; three full reference checks.
