The Training Division is responsible for program research, development and implementation of fire service programs. We facilitate the advancement of knowledge, skills and attitude of our staff. The division is comprised of five persons:

• Training Officer Don Kennedy
• Training Officer Glenn Ambrose

Currently, we are implementing an enhanced level of emergency medical response to meet the required skill level as this type of emergency makes up over 45% of our call volume. The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) program meets the Paramedic Association of Canada’s standards as is under the medical direction of York/Durham Base Hospital and Doctor Dave Austin.

In addition to ongoing maintenance training, suppression personnel are currently developing new knowledge and skills in firefighter rescue and survival techniques. Company Officers are maintaining incident command skills through a newly "in-house" developed Command Simulator.

The major of training sessions facilitated by Training Officers are conducted at the Markham Fire & Emergency Training Center located at 438 John Street, an ideal training venue the converted Fire Station.

Live Fire Training
All suppression crews participate in annual Live Fire practical training sessions conducted at East Toronto Fire Services Training Centre. These sessions provide an opportunity for suppression staff to perform high-rise evolutions, pumping operations and air management training in a practical setting, under fire conditions.

Ice/Water Rescue
On-Shift Instructors conduct practical Ice/Water Rescue Training scenarios as well as shore-based operations.
