Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti Congratulates Ontario Government for AMD Funding $56M funding creates next generation of jobs and economic growth
MARKHAM, ON — February 18, 2010 —Markham-based high-tech leader, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), was awarded a five-year grant of $56.4 million to fund research and development (R & D) activities for the development of its leading edge AMD Fusion family of processors, related software infrastructure and integrated computing platforms.
Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti described the major funding by the province as a great affirmation of AMD's excellence in new product development, the success of Markham's new global economic development plan – Markham 2020, and years of work cultivating new business activities. "We have been working with AMD, and its predecessor ATI Technologies, for over 25 years in Markham, and with AMD's R & D centre in India as part of our recent business missions," said Mayor Scarpitti. "The Ontario Government is to be congratulated for making this investment. It will enable significant breakthroughs in personal computing, generate new jobs and help to transform the platform of Ontario's economy."
Coincident with this announcement, Markham Council and the Markham Board of Trade presented AMD with the 2009 Smart Commute Award for its highly successful program to increase employee car pooling to reduce green house gasses. In presenting the award, Mayor Scarpitti described AMD as a model company and one that embraces a contemporary and progressive approach to work force diversity, strong environmental values and community involvement. "These are the key attributes of a sustainable approach to business that we embrace and encourage," said Mayor Scarpitti.
"Markham played an important role in encouraging our growth and success as the largest AMD R & D centre outside of the United States," said Dirk Meyer, AMD President and CEO. "They continue to work in close partnership with us, as with other local businesses, to ensure a solid business environment is in place for sustainable economic growth and opportunity. This new generation of Advanced Micro Devices could help solidify Markham as a hub for graphics and media processing."
Michael Chan MPP Markham-Unionville said, "We welcome this significant investment in Markham, which means high-value jobs will stay in our community. AMD is a global industry leader and the fact they chose Ontario for this enormous project speaks volumes about our talented workforce and competitive business environment."
The $56 million grant, in addition to AMD's investment of $376.4 million over five years, will mean retention of 537 existing jobs and creation of 100 new jobs at its Markham R & D centre. AMD operates facilities in 32 countries worldwide with more than 10,000 employees. AMD's Markham facility has a staff of approximately 1600.
