FACILITY

Thornhill Community Centre is managed by Rob Bell, Facility Coordinator, 905-944-3788 or email rbell@markham.ca. Clerical assistance for the facility is provided by Customer Service.

This facility opened in 1974. It consists of two ice surfaces, a fitness centre with saunas and whirlpools, community halls, a lounge, a privately-operated day care centre, and a library. Contact Bonny Halberstadt at extension 6622 or by email at bhalberstadt@markham.ca for information regarding renting one of the community halls or the Fireside Lounge.

SENIORS CENTRE

A first phase of the expansion of the Thornhill Community Centre, the Thornhill Seniors Centre was begun in August 2003. Located on the south side of the Thornhill Community Centre, completion of the $1.535 million centre is scheduled for late December 2003. The Thornhill Seniors Club, which currently has more than 600 members and continues to grow, will be operating from the centre by March 2004.

The centre features activity rooms, an office, a lounge and kitchen. Designed as a fully accessible facility by Wong Gregersen Architects Inc., the new seniors centre has direct links to the Community Centre and its existing halls.  Find out more about Seniors Programs.

ARENAS

The arena has two ice pads, each 85 x 200 feet. The west surface has seating for 1000 and the east surface for 300 spectators. It is home to Markham Islanders, Thornhill Community Hockey League, Thornhill Figure Skating Club, Toronto Canada Moose Jr. A Hockey Club and has been the site of such special events as the Central Ontario figure skating competitions and many hockey tournaments. FITNESS CENTRE

The Coordinator of the Fitness Centre is Warren Watson, 905-944-3791. Also working in the fitness centre are Ryan McKillop and Fraser Anderson, full-time Fitness Counsellors; Carol Manning, Aerobics Supervisor; and part-time fitness counsellors and aerobics instructors. The fitness centre offers a variety of membership types at different rates. It is open every day of the year with the exception of Easter Sunday, Canada Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.

POOL

Associated with the Thornhill Community Centre but at a different location is Thornlea Pool. Thornlea Pool is located at 8075 Bayview Avenue and operates under the jurisdiction of Sheri Krauss, Aquatic Coordinator, extension 6194. She is assisted by the Pool Supervisor, Barb Smith at extension 6586.

The pool measures 25 metres x 12.5 metres and can accommodate 189 bathers at any one time. It consists of six lanes, a one-metre diving board and tot docks, and is operated in conjunction with the York Region District Board of Education. Lessons at all levels are offered to those from 12 months of age through to adult programs, as well as Leadership Courses and private and semi-private lessons.
