Sport in Markham Just Got Better!

Markham Sport Council

The Town of Markham is excited to welcome the Markham Sport Council as the "voice of sport" in Markham.

Formed in 2005, the Markham Sport Council supports and advises the Town of Markham on sport-related planning and strategic initiatives, promotes active involvement in sport and physical recreation and provides a network for sport organizations to share experiences and resources.

More than 60 people representing more than 35 area sport organizations attending our first breakfast meeting that included a presentation (PDF document 149k/17p) of highlights and specific 2006 plans for MSC and an issue feedback session led by Paul Jurbala, Chair of the Markham Sport Council. Sport in Markham has never been better!

In February 2006, the MSC recieved a grant from the Canada Games Council to host a Canada Games Day. The day offered sport and physical activity events as well as demonstrations and presentations from the sports community and other services groups to promote physical activity, health and wellness to festival goers at the Milliken Children's Festival in September 2006. During Youth Week (May 7 - 13), MSC was presented with the National Bell True Sport Award for its support of the four True Sport principles: inclusion, fairness, excellence and fun. Some of the Markham programs include: Markham's Character CommunityExternal Link initiative, the Living School program, the Tony Roman Hockey Tournament for house league teams, diversity in the sports and the communities involved in Markham programs. And just recently, August 2006, MSC received a two-year grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for community sport organization development that will enable the us to help Markham sport clubs develop volunteer recruitment and retention, fair play and respect, and organizational effectiveness. Study approved for Markham World Class Sports Insitute

Also in 2006, the Town of Markham approved a feasibility study on the creation of a 16.5 acre multi-use elite Canadian Sport Institute, Ontario in the heart of Markham. The proposed complex, at Highway 407 and Kennedy Road, will include world-class training facilities, international competition venues, accommodation services for visiting athletes and office facilities for Ontario sport organizations. The Centre will offer the highest level of expertise in coaching, sport science and sport medicine. 

The Canadian Sport Institute, Ontario will include four ice rinks, basketball, volleyball and badminton courts, combative sports and gymnastics arenas and a major aquatic centre with both competition and training pools. [ News release - June 30, 2006 (PDF document 23k/1p) ]
