Protection of the environment is a key priority of Markham Council.

One of Markham's Corporate Goals is 'Environmental Focus': to protect, enhance and restore Markham's natural features and green spaces as part of a vital and healthy ecosystem.

Markham is committed to preserving environmental and historic areas.  Markham plans and creates policies to support this leadership role.

In 2001 The Town engaged residents with a survey to find out what things were going well and what needed improvement.  Of those surveyed 74% said protecting the environment was a high priority.  Participants also suggested preserving green spaces through slowing development and protecting the environment with bylaws.
