Used Fluorescent Bulbs & Tubes

Fluorescent bulbs contain small amounts of mercury and should never be thrown out with curbside garbage.
Fluorescent light bulbs have become a popular alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs because they save energy and last longer. Unfortunately, these bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should never be thrown out with your garbage.

Please take your fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs to one of Markham's Recycling Depots.

How are Fluorescent Bulbs & Tubes Recycled?

  • Markham uses the services of Aevitas Inc. to safely recycle spent fluorescent bulbs and tubes.
  • The tubes are processed by separating each tube into its individual components making each component clean and eligible for reuse.
  • The tubes are crushed and separated into four waste streams; aluminum end caps, brass, glass and mercury rich phosphor powder.
  • Each of these components is cleaned and forwarded from the processing plant in Cambridge, ON, to a recycling end market where they are used in other products.
  • Over 98% of each lamp is recycled and diverted from landfill!
