Used Fluorescent Bulbs & Tubes |
|
Fluorescent light bulbs have become a popular alternative to traditional incandescent bulbs because they save energy and last longer. Unfortunately, these bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and should never be thrown out with your garbage.
Please take your fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent light bulbs to one of Markham's Recycling Depots.
| How are Fluorescent Bulbs & Tubes Recycled? |
- Markham uses the services of Aevitas Inc. to safely recycle spent fluorescent bulbs and tubes.
- The tubes are processed by separating each tube into its individual components making each component clean and eligible for reuse.
- The tubes are crushed and separated into four waste streams; aluminum end caps, brass, glass and mercury rich phosphor powder.
- Each of these components is cleaned and forwarded from the processing plant in Cambridge, ON, to a recycling end market where they are used in other products.
- Over 98% of each lamp is recycled and diverted from landfill!
