FACILITY

The community hall and 1800 seat ice arena opened in October of 1972, with additions to the lobby and community hall and construction of an indoor 25 metre pool, a teach pool and fitness centre being undertaken in 1977-78. In the spring of 1999 the facility went through renovations consisting of the construction and replacement of the existing refrigeration equipment and concrete pad. Since September 2001, the centre has also housed a GO station/platform for commuters and users of the GO Transit system. Centennial Community Centre is managed by Dennis Riggs, Facility Coordinator.

ARENA

The arena has an NHL size ice surface with seating for 1,800 spectators and has hosted many multi-cultural/ community events, shows, television commercials and spectator events. It is home to the Markham Waxers Jr. A hockey club. Recreational ice skating, parent and tot skating, and pick-up shinny hockey are offered.

MEETING ROOMS

In addition to the arena, pool and fitness centre, the facility features three meeting rooms and an updated spacious modern lounge complete with commercial kitchen and bar facilities. FITNESS CENTRE

The Coordinator of the Fitness Centre is Warren Watson. Also working in the fitness centre are Dave Martin and Barb Lant, full-time Fitness Counsellors; Carol Manning, Recreation Supervisor, Fitness; and part-time fitness counsellors and aerobics instructors. The Fitness Centre offers a variety of membership types at different rates. It is open every day of the year with the exception of Easter Sunday, Canada Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day. POOL

Centennial Pool is under the jurisdiction of Lisa Young, Aquatic Coordinator, at extension 223. She is assisted by the Acting Pool Supervisor, Jennifer Evans, at extension 232. Lessons are offered to those from 3 months of age (Waterbabies) through to adult programs as well as older adult programs, aquatic leadership courses and private and semi-private lessons. The pool also is utilized by the Markham Synchro Club, the Markham Masters Swim Club, and the Markham Aquatic Club (MAC). Recreational swimming and aquafit are also available at the pool. School groups and community groups utilize the pool as well.

PROGRAMS

Martha Neely is the Program Coordinator in charge of programs and camps for the Markham Village Area.
