Access + Mobility
GOAL: Access, connections + viable choices for all.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
A Typical Markham Resident...
Owns 2.2 cars, uses a car for 85% of all trips, drives 63 km a day and contributes 5.5 tonnes of CO2 per household. Over 50% of daily trips by residents are within the Town. (Source: IBI Group, Presentation to Council regarding Markham Strategic Transportation Plan)
Progressive Cycling Infrastructure Investment
Markham’s aim is to ensure that all residents will be within a 5-minute bike ride from its cycling network under the Town’s Cycling Master Plan. The plan also aims to remove major barriers to cycling, connect to networks in adjacent municipalities, and encourage bike storage and shower facilities at workplaces. Today, 112 km of a planned 390 km signed on- and offroad bikes routes have been implemented. The network links urban areas within the town for commuter use, but also supports recreational use by including looping opportunities.
Transit Usage is Growing
Since 2001, transit trips have grown by 17% which means that overall transit as a mode of transportation has increased from 12% to 14% for all trips. In this period, GO trips tripled. (Source: IBI Group, Presentation to Council regarding Markham Strategic Transportation Plan)
Transportation Plan
The following strategies have been identified as key strategies for reducing the impact of car usage:
Make land use and development more pedestrian, transit and
cycling friendly.
Maximize opportunities for local transit.
Optimize transportation infrastructure and manage travel
demands.
Continue to promote liveable communities; this strategy
acknowledges that liveable and compact community development,
such as Markham Centre, promotes more walking through a mixing
and a range of land uses in one location.
