Economic Vibrancy
GOAL: A 'business-ready' community that is competitive & oriented to future opportunities.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
A Vision for Economic Development
In recognition of the importance of Markham’s continuing economic growth and competitiveness, Council adopted Markham 2020 – Economicy Strategy, a 20-year vision for the Town’s economy. The award winning strategy has contributed significantly to Markham’s ongoing local job and business growth.
Global Economic Restructuring
Provincial, national and global economies are changing rapidly, and irreversibly around the community. Emerging technologies, changing macroeconomic environments, the advent of new global economic competitors, and the rise of a highly mobile knowledge-based workforce means that Markham will have to address unpredictable and complex
challenges and opportunities if the success the Town enjoyed over the past decade is to be replicated.
Canada’s High-Tech Capital
Markham has established itself as Canada’s High-Tech capital with over 900 high-tech firms in the information technology, telecommunications, electronics and life sciences industries.
A Creative & Innovative Economy
Markham is envisioned as a place where innovation, technology and cultural diversity help fuel successful enterprise and create a high quality of life. The cultural, creative and entertainment cluster accounts for 200,000 jobs in the GTA, including 25,000 information technology and 30,000 in entertainment industries alone. Significant Job Growth Envisioned
Markham is and will be a major employer in the York and GTA regions. In 2006, Markham had 145,000 jobs. By 2031, an additional 100,000 additional jobs are envisioned. An Employment Land Strategy and several major trade missions are only two highlights of the activities that will see this vision become a reality. (Source: Markham 2020 – Economic Strategy)
