(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
Impressive & Unique Natural Setting
Markham encompasses 21,400 hectares defined by 5 watersheds. Each watershed contains a suite of natural heritage features including woodlots, wetlands, watercourses, valley and stream corridors and habitats that together contribute to the ecological health and function of the community’s landscape. Natural Heritage Network
Markham’s was originally a lush and forested ecosystem. From the early days of settlement through to recent times, natural features gave way to farms and then urban development. While many farms and natural areas remain, their connectivity and overall health have been compromised. Markham recently completed an extensive study to plan long term so as to ensure natural features are maintained and connectivity of natural areas are reestablished where possible. The Natural Heritage Network constitutes the community’s long term vision for a healthy and natural greenway system.
New Trees & Environmental Stewardship
Under the ‘Trees for Tomorrow’ program, Markham has planted 50,000 trees to date. The Environmental Sustainability Fund, a Town program that funds innovative and leading environmental initiatives that contribute to the health of the natural environment. Thus far, programs have been implemented by schools, business and non profits groups to promote environmental responsibility and enhance the protection of the Town’s natural assets.
