Energy + Climate
GOAL: Carbon neutral, responsible and resilient.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
Committed to Reducing GHG Emissions
The Town of Markham joined the Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) in 2007, and thereby made a commitment to achieve quantifiable reductions in local greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and enhance urban livability and sustainability. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Recommended strategies for reducing GHG emissions include:
Expanding energy conservation measures in the commercial,
residential and industrial sectors in both existing and new
construction.
Continue to implement land use planning strategies to avoid
transportation emissions related to new development; and to
encourage Markham’s intensification of development.
Promote the use of alternative vehicles and fuels in the
transportation sector.
The Need to Adapt to a Changing Climate
While reducing GHG emissions is critical, adapting to a changing climate is just as critical to ensure Markham remains liveable. Climate variability, weather extremes, and changing ecosystems are anticipated to cause vulnerabilities that must be understood and addressed. Possible impacts are known to include moderate to severe damage to property and infrastructure (e.g. flooding, snow, etc.), and risk of disease and adverse effects on human health (e.g. northern migration of tropical diseases, heat stress, etc.).
