Food Security
GOAL: Safe, accessible + healthy local food for all.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
Food Bank Usage
Since 2001, approximately 5000 Markham per year have been using local food bank services. (Source:York Region Food Bank)

Local Farmers Lack Land Security
Markham includes significant active farm land. However, a recent study revealed that this land is predominately owned by land development interests and senior levels of government. Short term leases on high value land is a disincentive for investment in equipment and more sustainble farming practices.
Leadership in Supporting Local Farmers
To support local food production, Markham recently became the first municipality in Canada to adopt Local Food Plus (LFP) procurement practices for its municipal food services. Local Food Plus requires farmers to adhere to strict guidelines to implement sustainable farming practices.
Community Food Growing & Farmer’s Market
York Region Food Network started its first community garden project in Markham in 1993. Today, the garden includes 90 individual plots. Markham’s successful Farmers Markets (Robinson St & Main St., Stiver Mill and York) are a great way to connect with local food growers and processors.
