Farming Origins & Significant Heritage Assets
Markham was originally settled by German farmers and later English settlers; today, Markham continues to celebrate this unique past thanks to the tireless efforts of many citizens to retain the buildings they built. Original settlements include Thornhill, Unionville, and Markham Village.
Canada’s Most Diverse Community

York Region is not Retaining New Immigrants
The phenomenon of recent immigrants moving from their original place of settlement within weeks, months or a few years of their arrival is called “secondary migration.” York Region as a whole experienced a 10% net loss of new immigrants. Most Diverse Council in GTA
