Identity + Culture

GOAL: Unique sense of place, culturally vibrant + inclusive.

Think about how the Forces of Change (24k/1p) may have an impact.

Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:

Farming Origins & Significant Heritage Assets
Markham was originally settled by German farmers and later English settlers; today, Markham continues to celebrate this unique past thanks to the tireless efforts of many citizens to retain the buildings they built. Original settlements include Thornhill, Unionville, and Markham Village.

Canada’s Most Diverse Community
65.4% of Markham’s residents are of a visible minority group. This statistic makes Markham Canada’s most diverse community! (Source: Statistic Canada - 2006 Census)

York Region is not Retaining New Immigrants
The phenomenon of recent immigrants moving from their original place of settlement within weeks, months or a few years of their arrival is called “secondary migration.” York Region as a whole experienced a 10% net loss of new immigrants. Markham statistics are not available. (Source: Federation of Canadian Municipalities - Immigration & Diversity in Canadian Cities & Communities Report 2008)

Most Diverse Council in GTA
At the last election, 25% of Markham’s Council was made up of visible minority citizens. While its the most representative Council in the GTA, it does not yet fully reflect Markham’s cultural diversity. (Source: Ryerson University – DiverseCity Counts Report 2009)
