Shelter
GOAL: Housing choice for all residents.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
Housing Costs
Current average housing prices were generally lower than they were in 2008. For the period June to Sept in 2009, the average detached bungalows were valued at $430,000, standard two-storey dwellings were valued at $420,000 and the average condominiums were valued at $280,000. (Source: Royal Lepage)
Housing Diversity
Housing diversity discusses the mix of housing types and tenures. Simpson’s Index of Diversity for Markham’s Housing Diversity is 0.59. While there is no ‘right answer’, a housing diversity index between 0.8 and 1 is known to lead to greater ethnic and income diversity. Greater housing diversity also implies that more homes can be located closer to services, jobs, and amenities, thus decreasing travel distances and costs.
Local Emergency Shelter
Today, Markham has one emergency shelter for the homeless. The MOSAIC INTERFAITH Out of the Cold program offers 25 overnight beds and up to 50 dinners between Nov. and March at one of four (4) institutions. At this stage, it is unclear if the local demand is greater for this type of housing.
NEW! East Markham Affordable Housing
Construction of the East Markham Non-Profit Homes was recently announced at 25 Deverill Court. The Interchurch Committee for Affordable Housing and Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program project will provide 120 safe, affordable housing units for lower incomes households.
Coordinated Response Against Homelessness
The York Region has been active in addressing the needs of at-risk homeless and homeless members of the region since 1998. Current activities include a major emphasis on homelessness prevention.
