Social Equality
GOAL: A Markham where all people can thrive.
Think about how the Forces of Change
(24k/1p) may have an impact.
Other factors to consider for us to achieve this goal:
Increasing Child Poverty
Child poverty increased substantially across the GTA. These rates went to 20% in 2005 from 8% in 1990 in Markham (Source: Children's Aid Society, see chart below).

Newcomers from Other Countries are Taking Longer to Reach Same Income
Immigrants are taking longer to reach the same income level as nonimmigrant Canadians (FCM). Only those with a university degree, ability in an official language and from a region other than Africa and Asia eventually manage to achieve parity—and even then, after 7 years. Most newcomers never reach income parity.
Aging Population = Different needs
As of 2006, 47.2% of Markham’s population was 40 years of age and over, which is slightly below the provincial average of 48.5%. Further, the median age of Markham’s residents is 38.1 years of age, compared to the provincial median of 39.0. Going forward, this will lead to a larger older population than today that will lead to new demands on community and health services, housing, and programs. (Source: Statistic Canada - 2006 Census)
