HERITAGE CONSERVATION IN MARKHAM

"Leading While Remembering"

The motto of Markham’s Coat of Arms reflects the importance of our community’s founders and past accomplishments in contributing to not only our present quality of life but also, the promise of our community’s future prosperity.

The most tangible remnants we have of Markham’s early development are our heritage buildings:  the quaint old homes and commercial buildings of the old villages and hamlets and the solitary farmhouses and outbuildings along the rural concession roads.

As reminders of Markham’s distinctive history and traditions, these heritage buildings contribute to the uniqueness of Markham as a community.  They provide us with a link to Markham’s rich past as well as a sense of continuity in our rapidly changing world.

The Town places a high value on the preservation and protection of our community’s unique history.  Many policies and programs have been developed by the Town to promote heritage conservation in Markham.
