Main Street Markham from Highway 407 to future Donald Cousens Parkway

Click on the image to enlarge study areaThe roadway commonly known as Main Street markham (between Highway 407 and 16th Avenue) and Highway 48 (north of 16th Avenue to the future Donald Cousens Parkway) is a prominent north-south roadway through the Town of markham, and is referred to as "Main Street Markham". Currently, Main Street Markham is 2 lanes between Highway 407 and Highway 7; 4 lanes between Highway 7 and 16th Avenue (i.e. markham Village); and 2 lanes north of 16th Avenue. While the section in Markham Village accommodates 4 lanes, with on-street parking, the roadway functions as a 2 lane road for a majority of the time.

Based on the findings of the Town of Markham Transportation Planning Study (2002), the Main Street Markham Streetscape and Traffic Management Study (2003), Highway 48 Urban Design Study - 16th Avenue to Major Mackenzie Drive (2005) and continued development in east markham, there is a need to address the overall transportation requirements along the Main Street Markham corridor.

Therefore, the Town of Markham has initiated a Class Environmental Assessment for Main Street markham from Highway 407 to the future Donald Cousens Parkway. This study will identify the problem/opportunities, assess the alternative solutions and preliminary design concepts to address the potential environmental effect, and determine the preferred alternative. The study is being conducted in compliance with Schedule 'C' of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, which is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act.
