1.      MINUTES OF THE MARKHAM PUBLIC ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETINGS HELD SEPTEMBER 13, 2006 AND JULY 12, 2006

Moved that the minutes of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee meetings held on July 12, 2006 and September 13, 2006 be adopted.

                                                                                                            CARRIED

  1. BRAINSTORMING SESSION

Ms. Judi McIntyre advised the committee that with Jane Perdue’s absence from the last several committee meetings, the development of the public art plan has been stalled.  Given Council elections in November, the completed plan will likely be presented to Council in January or February, 2007.

In the meantime, Ms. McIntyre suggested that the committee brainstorm ways in which public art can be promoted in Markham.  Suggestions ranged from cultural festivals on par with the successful “Nuit Blanche” event in Toronto, to Chalk Art competitions at local village festivals.

Discussion turned to the role of the Markham Public Art Advisory Committee and whether it would be best first to wait for Council to approve the public art policy.  Members discussed the need for the town to adopt the document and provide staffing and resources to support it.  A suggestion was made that members of the Markham Public Art Committee should accompany Jane Perdue to assist in making the presentation to Council.  Once the plan is approved, a brochure should be produced to describe the Markham Public Art Policy and the role of the MPAAC committee.  Events could then be held to announce the policy, promote public art and increase awareness for the committee.

3.  NEW BUSINESS

There were no new business items discussed.
