Markham's Race Relations Committee Presents Many Faces of Markham, Aboriginal Celebrations: Voices from the Past, Present & Future


Aboriginal wearing traditional attireThe City of Markham and the Markham Race Relations Committee present Many Faces of Markham on Sunday, March 20, 2016. This annual cultural celebration is held in recognition of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, as designated by the United Nation General Assembly in 1966 to pull together international communities in the fight against racial discrimination in all forms.

This year’s theme is ‘Aboriginal Celebrations: Voices from the Past, Present, and Future’ and supports the municipality’s commitment to the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD) and their focus to promote respect, understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity and the inclusion of Aboriginal and racialized communities into the cultural fabric of the municipality.

Art Contest

Students across the City are invited to submit works of art, videos and writing pieces to the Many Faces of Markham Art Contest, in celebration of Markham’s aboriginal community. All submissions can be viewed in the Flato Markham Theatre Main Lobby prior to the main event.

Submit your works of art by February 5, 2016 at 11:59 PM EST to:

Winners in each category will be informed between February 14 and March 4 2016, and will be presented with an award during the main event. Only winning submission will be returned and can be picked up at the Markham Civic Centre until April, 18, 2016.
