The Markham Energy Conservation Office (MECO) was established in 2005 using funding support from the City of Markham and PowerStream with a vision to position the City of Markham as a leader and municipal champion in energy conservation.
Its portfolio of programs is broad based and includes initiatives that are focused on:
- Leading, developing, and implementing energy conservation programs that deliver realistic demand shedding and cost avoidance results;
- Supporting the Provincial goals of creating a ‘culture of conservation’;
- Improving internal operations by implementing retrofit projects in existing facilities;
- Working to ensure new facilities are built to a higher, more efficient standard;
- Providing employee energy conservation awareness for City staff;
- Delivering programs with other organizations geared towards improving the energy efficiency of small-to-medium sized commercial businesses; and
- Raising awareness about energy conservation within the local community.
In 2009, MECO joined the newly formed Sustainability Office and played a key role in the preparation and implementation of the Greenprint, Markham’s Sustainability Plan, and handled expanded responsibilities including climate change.
MECO recognizes that energy conservation will save money, decrease demand, enhance the local energy supply by reducing its dependency on the grid, and best of all, reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
MECO is responsible for leading, developing, and implementing energy conservation programs that deliver realistic demand shedding and cost avoidance results, and are in line with the Provincial goals of creating a ‘culture of conservation.’
Energy Management Results
Markham completed another successful year of energy conservation and demand management with new energy reductions amounting to over a whopping $100,000 per year and utility rebates surpassing $35,000! Since 2012, the return-on-investment has averaged 2 years on all energy management projects that the City undertook, excluding incentives.
Contributions to energy savings were seen by all departments, most notably the Recreation Department. A special thanks to all staff that helped make this program so successful!
Additionally, Markham is generating between $250,000 to $300,000 in revenue from its solar assets and Demand Response program.
