One of the most important tools used by the City to protect heritage resources is the designation of individual properties under Part IV of the Ontario Heritage Act. To acknowledge the importance of the resource and raise awareness of Markham’s rich heritage, all properties individually designated are marked with a round bronze plaque, illustrated below. The plaque provides the name of the building and the year of construction.
To date, the City has over 250 properties protected through designation. To find out if a property is designated, check out the Register of Property of Cultural Heritage Value or Interest.
