Employment & Volunteer

Welcome to the City of Markham Employment Opportunities and Volunteer section.

Introduction and Overview

With its innovative sustainability and urban planning initiatives, fiscal accountability and focus on quality of life, Markham is a leader among Canadian municipalities. It is a dynamic, change-oriented and culturally diverse municipality with an unwavering desire for excellence. Markham takes pride in providing superior service delivery and best value for tax dollar.

Located immediately north of Toronto, Markham is the largest of nine municipalities in York Region, with over 300,000 residents and is recognized as a high growth community. Markham is comprised of four thriving communities- Markham, Unionville, Milliken and Thornhill.

The organization seeks individuals that reflect the Corporation's key values and skills that include, among others, customer service, innovation, fiscal accountability, inclusiveness, results orientation, teamwork, problem solving, communication and quality focus. For leaders, we seek the additional skills of strategic thinking, team leadership, political acuity, change leadership, impact and influence, and relationship building.

Diversity is one of Markham's six strategic priorities and the City of Markham strives to develop and maintain an environment where everyone feels welcome to participate and where respect and acceptance is practiced in words and actions by all.

The City of Markham employs close to 1,000 regular full time staff across over 20 business units, and depending on the season, is supported by 800 to 1,500 part time, seasonal and temporary staff. Markham has three unions (and Markham Public Libraries has two unions). The municipality hires staff to support the various services delivered to the public and positions range from development planning, parks and roads maintenance, engineering, administrative and building inspections, to firefighters, technologists, financial analysts, by-law enforcement and Recreation/Culture programming staff.
