Trouble Opening PDF Files?

Get Acrobat ReaderTo view or print a PDF file, you need the Adobe Acrobat Reader®, version 5 or later, on your computer. You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader® from Adobe website, go to Get Acrobat ReaderExternal Link and follow the instructions.

If you having difficulty accessing, viewing, or downloading PDF files, below are few options to assist you:

 


Download PDF to hard drive

With larger PDF files, it is better to save the file to your computer, and then print from that copy. Using this method, you avoid the risk of having a printing task interrupted if your Internet connection fails.

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or later:

  1. Right-Click (Windows) or hold down the mouse button (Mac OS) on the link to the PDF file, and then choose "Save Target As" from the pop-up menu.
  2. In the Save As dialog box, specify a name and location for the PDF file, and then click Save.
  3. Choose File > Open and click Browse.
  4. Choose All Files from the Files of Type pop-up menu.
  5. Select the PDF file you saved in step 2 and click open. The Acrobat Reader should open the PDF file inside the browser window.

 


Saving information in fillable PDF forms

Fillable PDF application form has sections that can be completed using a computer and then printed out and signed, rather than printing the form and filling in by hand.

Important: If you are viewing fillable PDF forms using Acrobat Reader, you will not be able to save the information entered into that form. Complete the application first and then print out a copy.

 


Disable "view in browser" feature

Try disabling the "View In Browser" or "Web Browser Integration" feature in your Adobe Acrobat Reader® (for plug-in and standard version). Doing this will force your Acrobat Reader® to display PDF outside your browser in a separate window. In most cases this will fix your problem. Show below is how to disable "Web Browser Integration".

Adobe Acrobat Reader® 5.0 (plug-in)

  1. Close Internet Explorer.
  2. Launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader® application.
  3. Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu and then click "Options".
  4. In the "Web Browser Options Area", deselect "Display PDF in Browser" and then click OK.
  5. Go to browser and try again to view the PDF.

Adobe Acrobat Reader® 5.0 (Standard)

  1. Close Internet Explorer.
  2. Launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader® application.
  3. Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu and then click "General".
  4. In the Preferences window, select "Options" in the "Categories" pane on the left.
  5. In the "Web Browser Options Area", deselect "Display PDF in Browser" and then click OK.
  6. Go to browser and try again to view the PDF.

Adobe Acrobat Reader® 6.0-10.0 (plug-in) 

  1. Close Internet Explorer.
  2. Launch the Adobe Acrobat Reader® application.
  3. Select "Preferences" from the "Edit" menu.
  4. In the Preferences window, select "Internet" in the "Categories" pane on the left.
  5. You will see a number of options on the right side of the windows.
  6. Deselect "Display PDF in Browser" and then click OK.
  7. Go to browser and try again to view the PDF.

 


Accessibility of Adobe PDF Files

Access.adobe.comExternal Link contains information on accessibility of Adobe products. Adobe has a free tool that allows visually impaired users to read any document in Adobe PDF format. The tool converts PDF documents into simple HTML or ASCII text which can then be read by a number of common screen reading programs that synthesize the HTML as audible speech.

 


*IMPORTANT** If the PDF file is 4 MB or larger, the Web browser may time out before it finishes downloading the file; ask the provider of the file to optimize it in Acrobat Exchange or Acrobat 4.0x. For more information on file optimization, refer to the Acrobat Online Guide.
