Are you looking for a wedding chapel? A community centre for your reception? A beautiful park for your photographs? Or a spectacular heritage site for your entire day's events? Whatever your heart's desire, if you've come to the City of Markham you've come to the right place.
Couples are required by the Marriage Act of Ontario to obtain a marriage licence before a ceremony can be performed. The Act also requires that a member of the clergy, the City Clerk or designate must be booked to perform the ceremony. Finally, two adults over the age of 18 must witness the ceremony and sign the marriage licence to validate it.
Marriage licences are issued Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM through the City Clerk's Office at the Markham Civic Centre.
A civil marriage ceremony is performed by the City Clerk in a simple and dignified service chosen by the couple and held either in the Wedding Chapel or the Wedding Room at the Markham Civic Centre.
If you would like to book an Officiant, you may contact Robert Anning at 905-960-2241.
If you would like to book the Chapel, you may contact our office at 905-477-7000 extension 2300 or 6930.
A religious marriage ceremony may be performed by a person who is registered under the Marriage Act to perform marriages in Ontario. If you wish to exchange your vows before a religious official, you can check on-line at ServiceOntario.ca/GettingMarried for a list of all religious officials who are registered to perform marriages in Ontario. Or call ServiceOntario at 1-800-461-2156 or 416-325-8305.
Wedding Chapel and Wedding Room
The City of Markham's Wedding Chapel is an elegant location with quiet ambiance and seating for up to 45 people. If you're looking for an even more intimate setting, you may wish to choose the Wedding Room, which will hold up to 8 people.
Both the Chapel and the Wedding Room are located at the Markham Civic Centre.
When you arrange your wedding service in either location, the City provides a registered officiant to conduct the ceremony. You may book a consultation with your officiant ahead of time or come in on the day of your wedding.
A limited selection of traditional and contemporary music is available in the Chapel or you may choose to play your own selections on the Chapel's audio system.
The chapel is available seven days a week between the hours of 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. The chapel may be booked for more than one hour, but it must be booked in one-hour increments only, such as 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. You should confirm the time of your wedding with the registered officiant or clergy member you have chosen.
