What does the Markham 150 logo mean?

Markham set out to create a logo that celebrates Canada’s 150th birthday while proudly honouring the city’s past, showcasing its diversity and looking forward to its exciting future.Canada 150 logo

The iconic maple leaf was chosen and given a unique Markham twist to animate the city’s motto “leading while remembering.” It consists of four vibrant colours, representing Markham’s heritage districts: Buttonville, Markham Village, Thornhill Village and Unionville.

Each leaf is a different colour with a symbolic meaning:

  • Green for our environmental focus
  • Blue for our economic prosperity
  • Yellow for social inclusion
  • Red for the vibrancy of our communities

The rich, bright colours also signify the vibrant cultural diversity of our city. Within the maple leaf are two silhouettes – that of a child reaching up to an adult. They symbolize the energy of celebration and the passing of knowledge, experience and wisdom to our next generation. Each of the four heritage districts (leaves) surrounding the silhouettes represent civic engagement and our cultural diversity.
