MPL actively serves the intellectual, recreational and cultural needs of our seniors. We have books, movies & music, programs, services and resources that are suitable for Markham seniors.
Our specialized services include homebound services, Kurzweil assistive technology system, and Visunet Canada partners program (VCPP).
All MPL branches have computer stations with free Internet access. Some branches offer free small group introductory classes on computer or Internet skills. Contact your local branch to register.
Seniors 65+ receive a 30% discount on all paid-programs offered by MPL. For assistance in registering please call the Contact Centre at 905-475-4731 during regular business hours.
Assistive Technology
The Kurzweil 3000 is a computer that can display text in large print and uses a synthesized voice to read aloud.
MPL has four Kurzweil 3000 stations. They are located at Angus Glen Branch, Markham Village Branch, and Thornhill Community Centre Branch.
It can scan your document (letter, book, newspaper) and read it to you while displaying the text in large print on a computer screen. It can read web pages including emails. The system also has more than 1800 classic books preloaded for its users.
Access to Library Materials for Everyone!*
Markham Public Library is proud to work with the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) in order to provide access to library materials for all our customers with print disabilities. Through CELA, eligible customers will have free access to a variety of wonderful resources, including:
- Electronic content (newspapers, eBooks, downloadable audiobooks)
- Described videos
- Braille
- DAISY CDs
Access the electronic items from the comfort of your home and have the physical items (videos, Braille, DAISY CDs) can be delivered straight to your home free of charge!
