VOLUNTEERING AT MARKHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY
We offer a range of opportunities that support learning through creative activities. We are looking for volunteers who can support the delivery of our events and many programs.
Volunteering at MPL is a rewarding experience that allows you to make a valuable contribution to the community while allowing us to strengthen and enhance the services we offer.

MPL VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
These are the positions available all year around at MPL. When you create your account in our portal please indicate which position(s) interest you. Once you have an account, you will need to sign-up for an interview.
EVENT ASSISTANT VOLUNTEER
Use your people skills to help at Library events and community festivals. We attend or host many community celebrations, parades, and cultural events throughout the year. Be part of the team that assists in making these events successful.
PROGRAM ASSISTANT VOLUNTEER
Work with Library staff and instructors to support participants in library programs and help create an exceptional learning experience. Our programs are offered to infants and their parents, preschoolers, school aged children and teens. The programs combine fun and learning in a wide range of topics including creative writing, public speaking, leadership and lots more!
PROGRAM LEADER VOLUNTEER
Support the development of children’s literacy, creative thinking and social skills by leading programs such as Crafts! and Games! Programs are supervised by library staff and facilitated by volunteers. The Volunteer Program Leader position is a great leadership opportunity for volunteers committed to sharing their passion for learning with children.
READING BUDDIES PROGRAM LEADER VOLUNTEER
Be a role model to a young reader! This is a great leadership opportunity for high school students committed to sharing their passion for learning with children. You will be responsible for creating a positive experience, sharing your enthusiasm for learning and engaging participants in reading and literacy based activities.
HOW TO VOLUNTEER

Click on “Fill in an application” to create your own MPL account.
Complete the application. Make sure to indicate what kind position(s) interest you.
Sign-up for an interview.
Complete the online General Orientation Workshop. It only takes 30-45 minutes!
Provide a recent Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). Learn how to obtain and submit a VSC.
Once you create your own account and meet the requirements you will be able to see the list of current opportunities. Note that the minimum age for all of our positions is 14 years of age.

Learning Place Programs for Teens
From Public Speaking and Essay Writing, to French and Math, Markham Public Library has designed courses based on the Ontario Curriculum that allow students to practice the skills taught in high school. Sign out the gadgets you need (like cameras), then edit your project with specialized software in-studio. It’s that easy!
