Markham Museum Volunteers
Want to have fun while learning valuable job and life skills? Become a Museum Volunteer!
Markham Museum is looking for fun, enthusiastic, and energetic people to volunteer during Special Events, Camps and Children's Programs. As a volunteer you will build leadership skills, learn how to work as a team, and help families get the most out of their visit! Opportunities are available for teens, adults and seniors. We need your help with:
- Camps
- Special Events
- Family Sundays
- Children's Programs
Volunteering is as Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5!
1. Create an account online
First, please create your online volunteer profile. Be sure to click the “Culture” checkbox when making your account. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age.
2. Complete and Submit Your General Online Orientation Workshop
To volunteer for the Markham Museum or any venue within the City of Markham you will need to complete our General Online Orientation Workshop. Please click Here for more information and to complete the Workshop. Once you have completed the Workshop you must Email Us and submit your certification number.
3. Submit Your Certification
To volunteer for any City of Markham activities, you will need to provide a VSC Police Check Form completed within the last 120 days. Click here for more information on VSC. You must submit your VSC to the Markham Museum or the Markham Civic Centre. There one of our Information Service Attendants will make a photocopy of your VSC and submit it to our database.
4. Attend a Volunteer Interview Night
Volunteers must attend a Volunteer Interview and Training Session at one of the City of Markham Venues. Once you have attended one of our new Volunteer Interview and Training Sessions your interview is valid across the City. You may have to attend a specific training at your venue of choice prior to your volunteer start date. This is to ensure you have the most up-to-date and accurate information for your volunteer placement. After you attend our new Volunteer Interview and Training Sessions you will receive a level of volunteer, you will be classified as an Event Assistant, Program Assistant or Program Leader. Your classification is based upon your interview. Event Assistants are qualified to help out at Special Events. Program Assistants are qualified to aid the program instructors in program setting as well as volunteer for Special Events. Program Leaders are qualified to lead full programs, assist in programs as well as volunteer for Special Events. Please check here to sign up for the next Volunteer Interview and Training Session. All training is free.
5. Sign up for a Volunteer Activity.
Once you have completed the General Online Orientation and Workshop, submitted your certification number, submitted your Police Check (VSC) and attended a Volunteer Interview and Training Session you are now eligible to sign up for volunteer activities! The required Police Check is called Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS) or Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC). We are required to see the original version of this police issued form, completed within the last 120 days, before we can confirm you as a City of Markham Volunteer. You retain the original version of the form, but we are required to see it in person. Scanned or photocopy versions cannot be accepted. To show us a copy of your Police Check, you may bring the original form to the Markham Civic Centre or the Markham Museum.

Email us your full name, so we can send you back a “Volunteering Request Letter”.

Take the Volunteering Request Letter plus two pieces of government-issued identification to a York Region Police location. Your identification must confirm your name, birth date and address. One piece of the identification must show your photo. Youths may bring student transcripts, pay stubs or, if under 15, parent driver’s license.

YRP will charge a $30.00 application fee if you have the "Volunteering Request Letter", or $60.00 without the letter.
