Every Child, Every Year

Young students in Markham now have priority access to world-class performing arts, thanks to Flato Markham Theatre's Every Child, Every Year initiative. Every Child, Every Year enables Every Student enrolled in grades 1 to 3 schools in Markham to attend one matinee performance at the Flato Markham Theatre once a year at No Charge.

Award-winning theatre company, Tout à Trac brings to the life Collodi’s legendary tale about the world’s most famous puppet, Pinocchio. Best known for their whimsical approach to classic tales, Tout à Trac “invites the spectator to dream eyes wide open, to fly to a world where anything is possible”. The whole family will enjoy this retelling of Pinocchio, another amazing journey into the heart of childhood and imagination.

In this region of West Africa where a drought has been persisting for very long, stands a big ancient baobab. One day, the ancient baobab brings forth an egg and from this egg is born a little boy. The people in the village discover that he is the only one who can free the source of water. Then begins a quest during which only the courage of a child might change the history of the World. In this sunny environment where shade provides a soothing break, the African percussions turn into animals while masks and puppets become genies or witches!

Curriculum Connections: French Language/French Immersion, personal connections to character/themes, variety musical pieces from different cultures, role-play to explore imaginary stories, visual art forms from diverse communities

It’s dance storytelling that sits on the sweet spot between artistry & entertainment. Still hype yet with substance. Dora Award-winning dance company Gadfly, brings its own brand of urban dance powered by choreographers Apolonia Velasquez and Ofilio Sinbadinho. They are captivating dancers, maverick choreographers, and most of all passionate professionals. Committed to increasing the visibility of street dances and to educate the masses about the importance of being a Gadfly: be unique, dare to question the established standards and INNOVATE.

Curriculum Connections: Dance as language to express feelings and ideas, musical elements used for different purposes, dance as an art form and comprehension of its meaning and significance.
