Become a Volunteer

Become a Volunteer in 4 Steps!

    1. Create your online volunteer account;
    2. Complete an interview and/or a department specific training;
    3. Complete your online General Orientation Workshop;
    4. Provide a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC);

*Note: volunteers must be over 14 years old to sign up.

Step 1 - Create your account

Click below on any department that interests you and fill in the application form. This will allow you to view and sign up for that department's opportunities.

Share your enthusiasm of swimming by  assisting our instructors with lessons in the pool.


Express your passion for sport and recreation by helping people of all ages and abilities participate in our programs and camps at our community centres.


If you are interested in creative expression and social health, assist with our programs and events at Flato Markham Theatre, Markham Museum, or Varley Art Gallery.

Markham Public Library

Help promote learning with our events and creative activities at our libraries.


Assist with community events, and help residents learn about sustainable living and Greenprint – Markham’s Community Sustainability Plan.

Step 2 - Interview/Department Specific Training

Once you have created an account and joined a department, sign up for an interview and/or department specific training in the volunteer portal. Look under, 'Interviews and Training Sessions' in the Opportunities tab.

You are able to join an interview session in any department, with the exception of Aquatics, that has an exclusive interview and training process that involves being in the pool.

Step 3 - General Orientation Workshop

We are now offering the General Orientation Workshop online. This training covers the City of Markham Volunteer Manual [PDF], which is required for all City of Markham volunteers. Complete the online General Orientation Workshop and QUIZ.

Important points:

  • Online training will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
  • Review the entire presentation and then complete the quiz.
  • This training is required every two years.

If you are unable to view the online training module, you may review the [PDF] version and complete the quiz.

There is an additional training if you want to volunteer for Special Need/Adapted programs. In addition to the General Orientation Workshop, please review the following and send quiz answers to

Step 4 - Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)

Obtain and submit a Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
