Fire Prevention Week - Oct. 7 - 13, 2018

This year’s Fire Prevention Week (FPW) campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere,” works to educate people about three basic, but essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire - and how to escape safely in the event of one:

Look for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.

Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.

Learn two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

BIG THANK YOU to our Fire Prevention Week 2018 Partners!

Community Education is the City of Markham’s first line of defense against fires in our community. The safest fire is the one that is prevented before it happens. By educating our residents on how to prevent fires, how to put out fires, and how to escape a fire quickly we eliminate dangerous situations before they occur.

We accomplish this via our public education programs. Some of the most popular options that are available to the public are:

  • A Fire Truck Visit – consists of a fire truck tour, explanation of firefighting equipment, brief discussion on home fire safety and the firefighter’s role within the community.
  • Fire Station Tour – for groups of 25 people or less, a fire station tour can be arranged. See where firefighters live, work, and train up close while receiving a information on home fire safety.
  • Educational Presentation – We attend community, corporate and special events to discuss, present, and exhibit fire and life safety messages relevant to your audience such as home or workplace fire safety.
  • Fire Extinguisher Training – available to groups that are interested in increasing their level of comfort with a fire extinguisher. Consists of both an in class presentation and practical exercise.

All requests should be submitted at least 7 days in advance in order to be processed. Markham Fire & Emergency Services staff are always in service when attending or hosting community events. This means that our staff may be late, leave early, or absent all together due to an emergency response. Unfortunately, in these cases you will likely not receive advanced notice and in the case of a fire station tour, all guests must vacate immediately. We apologize for any inconvenience. Should this occur, please contact us again to reschedule at 905-477-5530.
