Markham Gateway Public School for a fundraising basketball game
Fire Prevention and Public Education Officers attended Markham Gateway Public School for a fundraising basketball game in support of a program called Boys, Books and Basketball.
This program partners intermediate boys (Gr. 7 & 8) with primary boys (Gr. 1-3) for reading and basketball activities. The boys meet each week at recess. The intermediate boys read with the primary boys for half the recess period then coach them in basketball for the other half. Reading with the older boys helps the younger boys form a positive outlook towards reading and the intermediate boys have an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and act as mentors to the younger boys.
Many students attended to watch the boys play against Markham Fire & Emergency Services staff in a close and entertaining game while raising funds for this worthwhile cause.

Fire Safety Videos
Our fire safety videos have been created to address the typical questions we receive when we are out in the public at community events. The topics covered are smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, BBQ fire safety and candle fire safety. Each video is short so that you can gather the specific information you need. The videos are also offered in 6 languages: English, Chinese, Farsi, Greek, Tamil and Turkish. We will continue to produce additional videos in the future that will cover even more topics as well as additional languages.
York Regional Police Community Alert
Sign up for alerts from York Regional Police about community safety matters in your area. When you register for the program you'll be notified about situations such as a rash of break and enters, vehicle thefts or a missing child. The system will also be used to alert citizens in the event of an emergency.
Markham's Emergency Management Program is under the Office of the Commissioner of Community and Fire Services.
Working closely with Markham Fire and Emergency Services, the Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for Markham focuses on ensuring that Markham meets all the legal requirements set out in the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act in Ontario.
One of the most important roles of the Markham Emergency Management Program is public education in emergency preparedness. The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator participates in municipal events and provides public education in emergency preparedness to interested community groups.
