Emergencies can happen anywhere, at any time – sometimes without warning. An emergency can force you to evacuate your neighbourhood, or confine you to your home or workplace without basic services such as water, gas, electricity or a working telephone.

What’s New

Do you know what to do when you see lightning or hear thunder?

During the summer in Canada, lightning strikes every three seconds. Besides causing power outages and forest fires, lightning strikes can also seriously injure or kill.  If you are outside and hear thunder, you should go to a safe location. Read our Lightning Safety Fact Sheet to learn more.

Celebrate Emergency Preparedness Week May 4 - 11, 2013, by:

  3. Getting a 72hr Emergency Preparedness Kit

The week of May 4-11, 2013, has been designated by the Province of Ontario as Emergency Preparedness Week where communities across Ontario will have the opportunity to increase their awareness and understanding of emergency preparedness.

To kick-start Emergency Preparedness Week 2013, Markham Emergency Management and Markham Fire and Emergency Services will be participating in a York Region wide Emergency Preparedness Fair on Saturday May 4th, 2013.  Make sure you visit our displays at the fair, located at 17250 Yonge Street, Newmarket from 10am - 3pm.  Get lots of information and resources and see a variety of demonstrations by York Region's and local municipal emergency services.

The 2013 Emergency Preparedness Theme focuses on ensuring seniors and older adults are provided information and resources about being prepared. While they have the ability to help themselves and others, seniors can be more vulnerable during emergencies. Emergency Management Ontario has developed resources to help seniors and their families ensure they are well prepared.
