Renew Pet Licence

License Your Pet – It's the law!

Dogs and cats older than 3 months must be licensed annually with the Town of Markham (see By-law No. 2005-254 (PDF 148k/25p)). Licensing your dog or cat could play a critical role in identifying your pet should it become lost.

By purchasing a dog or cat licence, your pet also qualifies for a free ride home should the pet become lost, and is found or surrendered to the OSPCA.

Owners of unlicensed pets are subject to a $100 fine.

How do I get a licence?

You can purchase or renew a pet licence at the Markham Civic Centre, or at select animal clinics and pet food stores in Markham.

  1. Complete and submit Markham's Animal Licence Application Form (PDF 14k/1p).
  2. Pay an annual licensing and tag fee (see chart below)
  3. Provide a certificate that proves your pet has been vaccinated for rabies and is spayed/neutered.

In exchange, you will receive an identification tag that must always be displayed on the animal's collar (this includes animals that have a microchip identification implant). This tag cannot be transferred to another animal.

Just moved to Markham?

If you and your pet have moved to Markham in the last 30 days and your pet was already licensed by a different municipality, you can exchange that licence for a Markham licence at no cost.

Is your pet new to the family?

Animal licences are valid from January 1 - December 31. If you welcome a new pet into your home partway through the calendar year, you may be able to purchase a licence at a reduced fee. You must apply for the licence within 30 days of getting your pet.

It is a bylaw requirement that all domestic animals in Markham be licensed with the Town. Licensing your dog or cat could play a critical role in identifying your pet should it become lost.

Be a responsible pet owner

  • License your pet
    • Not only is it a Markham bylaw, it's protection for your pet
  • Pick up after your pet
    • It's civilized and expected of you, and it's required under the Markham bylaw. Let's enjoy our parks and green spaces together.
  • Use a leash
    • Keep your dog on a leash at all times when in public areas. Well-trained dogs who respond to command can enjoy our off-leash park at Rodick Rd and Miller Avenue.
  • Treat your pet responsibly
    • It takes more than food, water and exercise to keep an animal healthy. It also takes care and common sense. For example, don't keep pets in parked vehicles in the summer because temperatures can be extremely high – many pets die each year in these circumstances.
  • Take your pet to the vet for regular check-ups
