Waste Reduction Week

Waste Reduction Week in Canada

October 17 -23, 2016

The City of Markham encourages each resident to practice essential habits of reducing, reusing and recycling in their homes, workplaces and schools. Reducing waste saves our natural resources and creates jobs, providing for future generations.

Use any of these ideas to get involved in Waste Reduction Week:

  • Challenge your family to become zero waste for the week - try to reduce the amount of garbage your household produces. Think about the products you are buying and what packaging comes with them. Remember to use your blue box and green bin!
  • Clean out your closet and donate all the clothing you have outgrown. Look for Markham’s textile donation containers throughout the City to drop off all of your textiles. If they aren’t donated, they will be recycled.
  • Take a trip to one of Markham’s Recycling Depots – the depots accept all sorts of items for recycling that you cannot throw away in the blue box, such as Styrofoam, plastic bags and metal!
  • Organize a litter clean up around your community – contact the City of Markham at 905.477.5530 if you need supplies.
  • Pack your school (or work) lunch and snacks in reusable containers only - bake snacks at home so you don’t have any wrappers.
  • Plan a fall clean up during this week – many household items can be donated or recycled instead of ending up in the garbage.
