The concrete curbs that bound the edges of urban roads are part of the City of Markham's infrastructure. The lowered portion of the curb which a car mounts to enter onto a private drive is known as a curb cut or depressed curb. Any resident wishing to alter the curb along the edge of their property, either by creating a larger/new opening (curb cut) or reducing/eliminating an opening (curb infill) may apply to do so.
For a request to be approved, curb modifications must be in accordance with By-law 158-93 [PDF] which dictates allowable dimensions and configurations based on lot width, garage type, etc.
Curb modifications are done under the direction of the City of Markham. Residents are not permitted to make their own curb modifications. A fee is charged for any curb modification work performed. Upon review and acceptance of the application, a site inspection will be done to mark the limits of work and determine the amount of any fees due.
Any additional inquiries may be made to customerservice@markham.ca. Please place Curb Modification in the subject line of the email.
