Community Lead Testing Program Update

Provincial regulation requires all municipalities to test drinking water for lead content at the tap level. Twice per year licensed operators take samples from residential locations twice per year on a volunteer basis. The following results from Markham Community Lead Testing Program.

Summary Results Eighth Round of Sampling

The Town of Markham has successfully completed the eighth round of required water sampling for the Community Lead Testing Program.

Since the first round of sampling began in December 2007, Markham has taken 872 residential samples, 80 ICI samples and 484 distribution system samples and tested for lead. These samples were taken on a volunteer basis from locations evenly distributed throughout the Town, targeting the older areas of Markham. In total Markham has sampled almost double the residential samples as required by the Regulation.

Lead test results from rounds 1 to 8 PDF (43k/1p) were acceptable and below the MOE Drinking Water Quality Standards for lead of 0.010 (mg/L).

Thank you to all the residents who registered and participated in the program. Your assistance is vital in maintaining compliance with the Ministry of Environment’s regulatory requirements and helps Markham continue to deliver the highest quality of water.  If you had your water tested and have not received a copy of your sampling results please contact the Waterworks Department at 905-477-7000 ext. 2449.

Next Steps

Even though regulatory relief from the lead sampling was granted, the Town of Markham is still committed to ensuring the highest quality of water. To date, all known lead service lines in Markham, from the municipal watermain up to the property line, have been replaced. However, there may still be private service lines from the property line to the house that are made of lead or contain lead.  Similarly, the internal plumbing of a building may also still contain lead pipes. Should a resident suspect that their home has lead plumbing or that they are connected to a lead service line, they may contact the Waterworks Department at 905-475-4862.

Next Round of Sampling

The lead test program will continue with a ninth round of testing scheduled between December 15, 2011 and April 15, 2012.
