MARKHAM, ON – November 5, 2021 – Today, Mayor Frank Scarpitti officially opened the City of Markham’s new East Markham Operations Yard near the Northwest corner of Ninth Line and Major Mackenzie Drive. This 8.5-hectre facility will improve Winter maintenance response times across the entire City and support future needs in the urbanizing North and East parts of Markham.

“Markham is growing and to continue providing exceptional services to residents, a new operations yard is opening that will ensure a more efficient deployment of services, boost productivity and better manage our environmental footprint,” said Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti. “With two robust and state-of-the-art operations facilities, we can better balance travel times to all areas of Markham and we are confident residents will notice improved service levels.”

The new East Markham Operations Yard offers flexibility and efficiency by housing more than half of Road Operations’ resources. It will store 22,000 tonnes of road salt to guard against supply chain issues, 4,000 tonnes of sand and 50,000 litres of brine. There will also be parking space for 30 Winter road vehicles as well as offices for Operations staff and Winter operations drivers.

Strategically located to decrease the environmental footprint and increase the productivity of Road Operations, the facility reduces the current travel time needed to service the North and East parts of the City just in time for Winter.

The new East Markham Operations Yard will support crews that maintain and clear Markham’s more than 2,250 km of road and more than 1,150 km of sidewalk to make our streets and neighbourhoods safe and moveable.
