Important Safety Information

  • Place used tissues, face masks, latex gloves and wipes in your clear bag garbage
  • Ensure all garbage bags are closed and secured to protect our collectors
  • Unbagged or loose garbage will not be collected
  • Do not put in your green bin or blue box
  • Do not flush any disposable or baby wipes down the toilet
  • Always wash your hands with soap and water after handling any waste material
  • For your safety and that of our waste collectors, it’s vital that you respect physical distancing – keep a distance of 2 metres (6 feet) at all times
  • For those who are sick with or who tested positive for COVID-19:
    • Place all disposable items that have come into contact with your mouth, nose or eyes into the garbage – this includes masks, gloves, recyclables such as plastic water bottles, pop cans or milk cartons and compostables such as tissues and paper napkins.
    • To assist in protecting our waste collectors, double-bag and tie securely.

Services Available

  • Curbside organic, garbage and recycling collection will continue according to the 2020 Collection Schedule (don’t forget to use our What Goes Where tool).
  • Collection of leaf and yard material is scheduled to begin on April 21 and will be collected every two weeks.
    • Please store yard material on your property until regular bi-weekly collection begins and to refer to the updated online 2020 Collection Schedule for your start date.
    • If your space is limited, you can bring your yard material to a public drop-off location. Always call ahead for hours of operation. Fees may apply.
  • Markham Household Hazardous Waste Depot and Elgin Mills Community Environmental Centre are open to the public until further notice. Find out what items are accepted and hours of operation.
  • Textile donations
    • We ask that you minimize your donations if possible, as not to overload collection and processing resources.
    • All donated textiles must be clean and dry.
    • We can’t take textiles that have any health or safety concerns.

Services Not Available

  • All recycling depots are closed until further notice.
    • While depots are closed, please keep materials out of the landfill with these tips:
      • Store your clean Styrofoam
      • Plastic bags can be used to line your kitchen catcher or green bin
      • Compact fluorescent lightbulbs, household batteries can be dropped at Markham Household Hazardous Waste Depot.
      • Large cardboard can be broken down and securely bundled, place beside your blue box.
      • Scrap metal items are collected monthly, call us to book an appointment, 905.477.5530.

  • No special pickups or purchase/exchange of blue or green bins until further notice.
  • Green bins and blue boxes are available for sale at most home stores such as Home Depot, Rona, Walmart, Home Hardware and other retailers.
  • Markham’s compost giveaway has been postponed until further notice.
