The City of Markham started the reconstruction of Main Street Markham from 16th Avenue to Major Mackenzie Drive in the fall of 2012 with the installation of underground services (watermain, storm sewers, and associated service connections). Above ground work (e.g. curbs, sidewalks, and re-paving) along with streetscaping was completed in summer 2013. Unlike the reconstruction of the portion from Highway 7 to Bullock Drive, this section of Main Street’s above ground and below ground work is being completed simultaneously.
Main Street Markham between 16th Avenue and Major Mackenzie Drive was widened to a 4-lane road, with two (2) lanes northbound and two (2) lanes southbound. A centre median was also installed to enhance safety and provide an opportunity for streetscaping initiatives.
