West Thornhill Storm Sewer & Water Replacement Project
Why Does West Thornhill Need a Stormwater Flood Remediation Plan?
The City of Markham will replace the existing storm sewers and watermain along Doncrest Drive, Poinsetta Drive and Daffodil Avenue as part of the implementation of the West Thornhill Flood Control program. The above noted roads will be temporarily closed to through traffic (local access only) during the construction. Please see Attachment - "A" [PDF] showing the limits of construction.
The scope of work includes but is not limited to the following:
- Storm sewer replacement
- Watermain replacement
- Sanitary sewer replacement
- Road reconstruction
The City also plans to replace the watermains on Rossea, Spirea and Sunflower Courts and resurface the roads. The construction is scheduled to begin on July 21, 2014 and is expected to last approximately one (1) year.
In order to complete construction, Doncrest Drive will be closed between Bayview Avenue and Prescott Court for approximately eight (8) weeks beginning August 2014. (Attachment - "B") [PDF]
The Contractor for this project is Lancorp Construction Company Limited and the Consulting Engineer is R.V. Anderson Associates Limited. While inconveniences are expected as a result of construction activities, the City of Markham will take all reasonable steps to minimize the impacts. All areas disturbed during construction will be restored to their original condition.
- Driveway Access
Driveway access may be interrupted during construction; however, this inconvenience will be kept to a minimum. Residents unable to enter their driveways due to construction are requested to park their vehicles on adjacent side streets or elsewhere to accommodate construction activities.
At certain times during the work, vehicle and pedestrian traffic may be disrupted. Closure of traffic lanes will be restricted to the immediate work area wherever possible.
- Signs will be posted to advise of detours, lane closures and pedestrian crossings.
- Emergency (police, fire and medical response) access will be maintained at all times.
- The contractor will assist in domestic garbage removal on scheduled garbage pickup dates.
All parking signs and regulations must be complied with when parking on adjacent streets. The Overnight Parking Prohibited By-law will be waived to those unable to access their driveway. Residents are advised not to park where on-street parking is prohibited. There will be no consideration for parking offences in areas designated as No Stopping or No Standing. In addition, the following restrictions still apply:
- No stopping on sidewalks or boulevards,
- No stopping by fire hydrants, fire routes, rush hour routes, and
- No parking within 9 metres of intersections.
- Your compliance is appreciated and helps maintain safe neighbourhoods.
Many residents have planted landscaping, fences, irrigation systems or other physical features in front of their home which are in fact on City property. These may be in the way of the construction. In such cases, residents are advised to remove these items prior to the beginning of construction in order to avoid unnecessary damage. The City will not be responsible for damage to any privately-owned items installed on the City’s property.
Work will typically take place from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM from Monday to Friday.
