The City of Markham has published a second notice, “Safety Awareness Program and Implementation of Train Anti-Whistling Update’ .
All directly affected residents, business owners, schools, places of worship, community centres, York Region, Police Services and Emergency Medical Services within Markham have also received a copy of this notice.
This is a follow-up to a notice first distributed in 2018.
The City of Markham has worked with Metrolinx on the implementation phase of the train anti-whistling program at two (2) additional rural at-grade locations (14. Elgin Mills Road, 16. 19th Avenue). This implementation will be in addition to 13 locations that are completed and fully-operational.
The tables below highlights the locations of the anti-whistling program, which phase the anti-whistling will be implemented in and the new features installed as part of the program.

The Safety Awareness stage of the program promotes the new features installed at 15 completed at-grade crossings.
In addition to the aforementioned Notice, the information provided is to inform the public of the changes at the specific crossings and to be conscious of the signs, and visual and audible markers for safety at the crossing, in the absence of a train whistle, and cross the tracks in minimal time in a safe and efficient manner.
These crossings have been upgraded with either new maze barriers or pedestrian warning system gates, with the exception of "14. Elgin Mills Road" and "16. 19th Avenue" locations. Both of these locations have existing vehicular gates and updated line painted and signage.

The City of Markham is working closely with York Region and Metrolinx in finalizing the design and construction of the program at Ninth Line crossing.
Train Anti-Whistling has now been implemented at these 13 locations:

Markham and York Region have been working closely with Metrolinx to implement train anti-whistling at the public at-grade train crossings along the Stouffville GO Line. Train anti-whistling has now been implemented at the following locations:
Bur Oak Avenue and McCowan Road Crossing works are now complete, and Markham and York Region are working with Metrolinx to address the remaining deficiency in order to implement train anti-whistling at these locations.
