Operations & Summer Student Recruitment

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for a Summer Student position in Operations individuals must be enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis both before and after the summer vacation period and must be able to work the entire season from May until Labour Day. Individuals will be required to submit proof of student status.

Hiring of New Students

For the 2016 season, Summer Student opportunities in Operations will be posted from approximately December to February. Candidates who apply on-line and have the necessary experience may be invited to an interview time during February 16 to February 26.

Preference will be given to students with previous work experience performing grounds maintenance tasks including operating equipment, mowing grass, trimming, planting of flowers, trees and shrubs.

Rehiring of Students

Students who worked in the Operations department the previous summer may reapply as a Returning Summer Student. All eligible returning students must apply on-line between December 14 and January 3 and submit an updated résumé along with a cover letter indicating their interest in returning to the City of Markham Operations department as a student for the upcoming year. Please sign in and click on the posting titled “Returning Summer Student - Operations” to submit your intent to return to the City.

No applications from returning students will be considered after January 3. If you miss the returning student deadline you may apply to the posting for new students. Please note that your resume will be treated the same as a new applicant and not as a returning student.

Operations Summer Student Positions

Summer Student - Parks Labourer

The Parks Labourer performs a range of duties in playgrounds, athletic facilities and on parks and boulevards. Performing grounds maintenance tasks including operating equipment, mowing grass, trimming, annual planting of flowers, trees and shrubs.

Some positions operate 7 days a week and include early mornings, weekends and some evenings depending on the location.
