The City of Markham offers full day and half day summer camps to approximately 9,500 children between the ages of 3 and 16 each year. Employment opportunities for youth are available in a diverse variety of culture camps, including but not limited to, paint exploration, sculpture art, junior fashion and interior designers, painting and printing, photography, archaeology, science, garden and many more. Camp staff are chosen for their enthusiasm and interest in children, creativity and leadership skills, and their ability to meet the below core competencies. All camp staff will need to be able to demonstrate good judgement and strong attention to safety. Camp staff must be qualified in Standard First Aid, CPR Level ‘C’ (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation), and HIGH FIVE, and depending upon the camp position, previous camp related experience and/or leadership skills. Camp Counsellors must be a minimum of 16 years of age and volunteers a minimum of 14 years.

The City of Markham provides a variety of employment opportunities to students on a temporary basis to fill various camp positions. Brief descriptions of the different kinds of culture camp positions are outlined below.
Summer Program Coordinator, Art Gallery - The Summer Program Coordinator manages the Varley Art Gallery Camp Programs and has oversight responsibilities to ensure the highest level of program quality for the Art Gallery/Museum’s art, thematic and exhibition based summer camp programs including the areas of program planning, program delivery and administration. The Summer Program Coordinator oversees approximately 80 to 120 campers per week ranging from 5 to 13 years of age, while supervising and coaching 35 to 40 staff including supervisors, counsellors, specialists, and volunteers.
Summer Program Coordinator, Museum - The Summer Program Coordinator manages the Markham Museum Summer Day Camp Programs and has oversight responsibilities to ensure the highest level of program quality for the Museum’s curriculum based summer camp programs including the areas of program planning, program delivery and administration. The Summer Program Coordinator oversees approximately 100 to 150 campers per week ranging from 3 to 13 years of age, while supervising and coaching 35 to 50 staff including supervisors, counsellors, specialists, and volunteers.
Head Program Instructor, Theatre - The Head Program Instructor manages the Flato Markham Theatre Drama Camp Programs and has oversight responsibilities to ensure the highest level of program quality for the Theatre’s drama camp programs including the areas of program planning, program delivery and administration. The Head Program Instructor oversees campers ranging from 6 to 17 years of age, while supervising and coaching staff including counsellors, and specialists. This position is primarily required for the leadership and facilitation of performing arts programs in live performance, dance, musical theatre, mime, movement, and or voice.
Camp Supervisor, Art Gallery/Museum - The Camp Supervisor manages 1 to 2 of the Art Gallery/Museum’s Summer or Holiday Day Camps with responsibilities including curriculum based program planning, program delivery and administration. The Camp Supervisor oversees up to 100 campers ranging from 3 to 13 years of age, while supervising and coaching up to 10 to 20 staff including counsellors, specialists, and volunteers.
Camp Specialist, Art Gallery/Museum - The Camp Specialist supervises a group of campers at the City of Markham’s Art Gallery/Museum Summer Camps and Holiday Day Camps with responsibilities including program planning, program delivery and administration. Program planning will have a focus on one or more of the following skill set areas: archaeology, history, anthropology, sciences, urban nature, engineering, textiles, fashion, art history, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, textile, fashion and interior design.
Camp Specialist, Theatre - The Camp Specialist supervises a group of campers at the City of Markham’s Theatre Drama Camps with responsibilities including dramatic arts program planning, program delivery and administration. Program delivery will have a focus to develop skills of dance, mime, clown, improvisation, movement, voice and theatrical themed activities. Specific expertise in these areas is required.
Camp Counsellor, Art Gallery/Museum - The Camp Counsellor supervises a group of campers and volunteers at the City of Markham’s Art Gallery/Museum’s Summer & Holiday Day Camps with responsibilities including facilitating lessons, program delivery and administration. Through effective leadership and program delivery, the Camp Counsellor enables children and youth to develop skills, make friends, socialize and build self-esteem. Accountable for the well-being of a group of campers under the guidance of the Camp Supervisor, ensuring camp activities are safe, educational, inclusive, high quality and meet the Art Gallery/Museum overall goals.
