Markham Wins IPAC Innovation Award For Its Leadership In Digital Democracy

Person holding tablet with elections Markham webpage opened on it.

The City of Markham is a digital democracy leader in Canada. So much so, it has claimed yet another award for its approach to the 2022 Markham Municipal Election, its fourth recognition this year alone!

The City recently received the prestigious Public Administration Excellence Innovation Award for its efforts on digital democracy from the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC) at its 76th anniversary conference in Ottawa.

The City of Markham was Canada’s first municipality to vote online, delivering an online voting program for six consecutive municipal elections since 2003. In 2022, Markham used technology like enhanced automation, artificial intelligence and advanced cryptography to streamline service delivery and help build trust in next-generation voting technology.

Awards received this year include the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) Peter J. Marshall Innovation Award, the Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) Willis Award for Innovation, and the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) E.A. Danby Award for Municipal Administration.

Congratulations Markham!
