City Board/Committees provide Council with a variety of diverse perspectives, specialized skills and expertise specific to their mandate. Apply now to use your talents and interests for the benefit of our community.

If you are interested in applying, you may attend an information session on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at 7 PM at Markham Civic Centre (located at 101 Town Centre Boulevard) in the Great Hall to obtain more information.

Board and Committee Vacancies

Volunteer positions are currently available on the following Boards/Committees:

Advisory Committee on Accessibility

The Committee shall assist Council in improving opportunities for persons with disabilities by promoting the implementation of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) in Markham. Meetings are held the third Monday of the month at 5 PM at Markham Civic Centre (excluding July and August). There are currently up to six (6) vacancies on the Committee. Applicants must be a person with a disability, have experience working or volunteering with persons with a disability, or have experience supporting a person with a disability.

Animal Care Committee

The Committee promotes and ensures excellence and professionalism in animal care through continuing education, effective networking, mutual support and enhancement of the ability to provide quality, cost effective care to animals in Markham. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Committee. Meeting are held monthly on the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM. Applicants should have a keen interest in animal care within the City of Markham.

Box Grove Community Centre Board

The Board is responsible for the operation, management and maintenance of the Box Grove Community Centre. There are currently two (2) vacancies on the Board. Meetings are held bi-monthly on a weekday to be determined in the evening. Applicants should reside in the Box Grove community.

Canada Day Committee

The Committee undertakes the planning and execution of the Canada Day Festivities. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Committee. Meetings are held on a Monday at 5:30 PM – once a month from January to May; two meetings in June and thereafter on an “as needed” basis. It is an asset for applicants to have event planning experience.

Committee of Adjustment

The Committee is a statutory, arms-length Committee of Council responsible for adjudicating on various Planning Act matters, including minor variances and consents to sever properties, among other duties. Meetings are held on Wednesday at 7:30 PM, approximately 18 meetings per year. Knowledge of the municipal planning process and experience on an adjudicative body preferred. There are up to seven (7) vacancies on the Committee.

Cycling & Pedestrian Advisory Committee

The Committee represents the interests of cyclists and pedestrians in Markham, focusing on their needs and priorities. It provides advice and support to the City on cycling & pedestrian infrastructure, education/outreach and research. Meeting are held monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 7 PM. There are up to three (3) vacancies on the Committee. Applicants should be familiar with issues pertaining to cyclist & pedestrians.

Doors Open Markham

The Committee undertakes the planning and implementation of the event. Meetings are held monthly; the day and time of the meetings will be determined at its inaugural meeting. There are up to five (5) vacancies. Experience in event planning is an asset.

Heintzman House Community Centre Board

Heintzman House Community Centre is seeking volunteers for its Board of Directors. The Board normally meets once a month except during the summer, or in December and January. It advises the City on preservation and operation of this heritage mansion. The Board participates in Doors Open Markham and the Thornhill Village Festival, and through its committees it encourages Community involvement with an annual Artisan Craft Show, Art Show, and Halloween night for children. Applicants should reside in the Thornhill Area. There are currently up to two (2) vacancies on the Board.

Heritage Markham Committee

The Committee advises and assists Council on matter relating to heritage conservation and promotion. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7:15 PM. There are up to four (4) vacancies. Applicants shall have an interest in local architectural conservation and must reside in the Unionville, Thornhill or Markham Village area.

Environmental Advisory Committee

The Committee provides advice on environmental policy, planning & sustainability and promotes environmental awareness within the community. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Committee. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 PM. Applicants should have knowledge of environmental planning, policy & sustainability.

Flato Markham Theatre Advisory Board

The Committee reviews the Theatre’s operations and budgets; assists with raising funds for the Theatre; increases the awareness and profile of the Theatre within the community; and provides advice to Council on matters regarding the Theatre. There are currently three (3) vacancies on the Committee. Meetings are held the fourth Monday of the month at 5:30 PM. Applicants should have interest and knowledge of the performing arts and fundraising experience is an asset.

Main Street Markham Committee

The Committee will implement the vision for Main Street Markham and provide input on projects and studies affecting the area. There are currently up to three (3) vacancies on the Committee. The meetings are held the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 PM. Applicants should reside in the Markham Village area.

Markham Milliken Children’s Festival Committee

The Committee undertakes the planning and execution of the Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival Committee. There are currently up to (5) vacancies on the Committee. Meetings will be held once a month at 5:30 PM on a weekday. Applicants should be familiar with the event and it is an asset to have experience in event planning.

Markham Public Library Board

The Board ensures Markham Public Libraries have comprehensive and balanced library materials and it secures adequate funds to carry on the Library’s programs that meet the needs of Markham residents. The Board meets the fourth Monday of the month at 7 PM. Volunteers must be eighteen (18) years old or older; a Canadian citizen; and a Markham resident. There are currently up to twelve (12) vacancies on the Board.

Property Standards Committee

The Committee is an arms-length statutory body that hears appeals on Orders issued by Property Standards Officers. Meetings are scheduled as required. Knowledge of municipal by-law enforcement programs and experience on an adjudicative body is preferred. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies.

Public Art Advisory Committee

The Committee reviews public art proposals and provides advice and recommendations to Council on public art matters. There are currently up to four (4) vacancies on the Committee. Meetings are held on a Wednesday at 6 PM. Applicants should have an interest in public art.

Public Realm Advisory Committee

The Committee will work with community groups through a funding program to enhance and animate Markham’s public spaces through partnerships, community engagement, and City leadership. Meetings are held quarterly and at the call of the Chair. There are currently up to two (2) vacancies on the Committee. Experience in landscape architecture or urban planning is preferred.

Race Relations Committee

The role of the Race Relations Committee is to provide advice to Council on matters involving ethno-cultural communities in Markham. Applicants shall have knowledge and expertise of ethno-cultural communities and other related issues. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Committee.

Seniors Advisory Committee

The Committee provides recommendations to Council on Seniors’ issues to solicit input from the Seniors community and promotes awareness of Seniors’ needs within the City of Markham. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 3 PM. Applicants should have knowledge and expertise of seniors’ issues within Markham. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Committee.

Seniors’ Hall of Fame Committee

The Committee undertakes the planning and execution of the Seniors Hall of Fame Awards. There are currently up to (5) vacancies. Meeting are typically held on a Wednesday at 11 AM. Applicants should be actively involved in their community and have extensive volunteer experience.

Markham Board and Committee Appointment Policy

The Board and Committee Appointment Policy, approved by Council on March 22, 2011 ensures a fair and equitable appointment process to City Boards and Committees. The policy ensures the most qualified applicants are appointed as Members; and applicants are representative of Markham’s diverse community.
