Volunteers Needed: Let’s build Markham’s future, together.

Are you interested in getting involved in the process of governing our City and charting its future? Our boards and committees provide City Council with a variety of diverse perspectives, specialized skills and expertise specific to their mandate.

Board and Committee Vacancies

Canada Day Celebration Organizing Committee
The committee undertakes the planning and execution of Markham’s annual Canada Day celebrations.  There are currently five (5) vacancies. 

  • Meetings are held on a Monday at 5:30 PM
  • Once a month from January to May
  • Two meetings in June and thereafter on an “as needed” basis

It is an asset for applicants to have event planning experience.

Doors Open Markham Organizing Committee
The committee undertakes the planning and implementation of the annual Doors Open Markham event. There are currently five (5) vacancies.

  • Meetings are held monthly
  • Day and time of the meetings will be determined at its inaugural meeting. 

Experience in event planning is an asset.

Terms of Reference [PDF]

Heritage Markham Committee
The committee advises and assists City Council on matters relating to heritage conservation and promotion. There is currently  (1) vacancy. 

  • Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at 7:15 PM 

Applicants should have an interest in local architectural conservation and must live in the Unionville area.

Markham- Milliken Children’s Festival Organizing Committee
The committee undertakes the planning and execution of the annual Markham-Milliken Children’s Festival. There are currently (10) vacancies. 

  • Meetings will be held once a month at 5:30 PM on a weekday.  

Applicants should be familiar with the event and it is an asset to have experience in event planning.

Heintzman House Community Centre Board

Heintzman House Community Centre is seeking volunteers for its Board of Directors.  It advises the City on preservation and operation of this heritage mansion. The Board participates in Doors Open Markham and the Thornhill Village Festival, and through its committees it encourages Community involvement with an annual Artisan Craft Show, Art Show, and Halloween night for children. There are currently up to five (5) vacancies on the Board.

•    Meetings are held once a month except during the summer, or in December and January.

Applicants should reside in the Thornhill Area.

German Mill Community Centre Board

The Board is responsible for the operation, management and maintenance of the German Mills Community Centre Board.  There are currently up to two (2) vacancies on the Board.

•    Meetings are held bi-monthly on a weekday to be determined in the evening.

Applicants should reside in Thornhill.

The Board and Committee Appointment Policy [PDF], approved by City Council on March 22, 2011, ensures a fair and equitable appointment process to City boards and committees.  The Policy ensures the most qualified applicants are appointed as Members, and that applicants are representative of Markham’s diverse community.
